Kenya, Summer 2000

A fortunate set of circumstances converged. Mwenda, a Kenyan friend with whom I studied anthropology at Illinois, was back home, teaching and living on a compound just outside of Nairobi. He invited me to come visit. I had a little $$ from teaching a course in the spring semester, I just left the last 3 chapters of my dissertation with my advisor, and had a visiting position at a nearby college for January. So, I took the money and ran to Kenya for six weeks. (What else would you have me do??!!)
