"Visual Quotations" Photographs by Richard Freeman
Peru 1986
These images start from the cordilleras north and east of Lima. The main towns, which are centers for mountain climbing, are: Huaraz, Huanuco, Huancayo, and Huancacelica. I am not sure which of my images were taken where, but I did travel to them from north to south, and the images are in that order. From there I do have the images identified, they are also in the order of my travels. I stayed three months in Cuzco, I just fell in love with the town and the area, being the heart of the Inca Empire. Images of my hikes on the Inca Trail and nearby ruins are in the "Ancient Civilizations" porfolio. From Cuzco I took many soujourns, including the trip around the 21,000 foot peak of Mt. Ausangate, and a trip down the Urubamba River, taking the train past where the tourists get off at Machu Pichu to the end of the line in Quillabamba. From there I took a two day trip on the river to this incredible canyon (several Italians drowned a year earlier trying to navigate this stretch during the rainy season). I also went further in land from Quillabamba to see the ruins of Espiritu Pampa (see these images in the "Ancient Civilizations" portfolio). In Cuzco I found a Spanish tutor, stayed with a family, ran into a friend I hadn't seen in years, and befriended many in the community. It was a wonderful, wonderful time.
After Cuzco I traveled south to Puno and Lake Titicaca. I eventually left Peru from the lakeside town of Yunguyo and entered the Bolivian town of Copacabana.
